#player2 Joshua Joshua Sokol
#title 2019 NSC Round 9
#description Carl Johnson plays Joshua Sokol in Round 9 at the 2019 NSC
>Carl: CHLNOQT 8D CLOTH +26 26
#note I was surprised to see NOTCH H8 outsim CLOTH-- probably due to the CLOTHE hook, as well as the possibility of the Q at J6 after NOTCH. (-2) #strategysmall
>Joshua: GHIILOU D8 .OUGH +22 22
#note when he played CLOTH I realized that I was at a huge disadvantage, since he knew all the extensions and I didn't. Thinking about extensions did not help me find OIL(CLOTH). #findinglarge #knowledgelarge
>Carl: CNOPPQS 12A QOP. +28 54
#note Nearly missed this, as I often do with QOPH. Josh noted that all of the first plays were exact or near-homophones, for those of you playing Annotated Game Yahtzee.
>Joshua: AIIJLTZ 9H AJI +23 45
#note this increases the value of the Z as much as I possibly can, since now I am guaranteed almost 40 points with it. But I can also draw ZL(O)TE or ZL(O)TY for a ton.
>Carl: CNOPRSU 10G UPON +29 83
#note I was flustered here, since Josh had miraculously blocked SUNPORCH H1. I absolutely hated UPON when I played it, figuring I was just asking for Josh to have a Y, or some big play on column A, and why would I unload the U with the Q at A12? Surprisingly, UPON wins the sim just because all the other candidates all suck. CROUP B10 takes an E, POS E10 burns the S and doesn't neutralize the Q spot (because of APOS). PUG 11B burns the U and doesn't score anything. UPON is probably a little better than the sim suggests, since AJI telegraphs an S, and UPON blocks both 2x2 lanes.
>Joshua: EIKLTWZ B10 ZL.TE +68 113
>Carl: CDNRRSY F6 CR.NY +42 125
#note I know I sai... okay, I'll really stop mentioning just how lucky I was at Nationals. Promise.
>Joshua: DIKMRVW 8J VIM +17 130
>Carl: ADIRSTW A12 .ADI +47 172
>Joshua: DEKRTWX 11I WERT +34 164
>Carl: ?ARSSTW M2 WASTeRS +79 251
>Joshua: DFKLRRX 6K FL.X +29 193
>Carl: ?DEGIRV 4F DIVeRGE. +82 333
>Joshua: BDGIKRR 12L IRK +18 211
#note really in the shits here
>Carl: ADEEOTT N10 TO.ED +24 357
#note OAKED N10 is a little better since there are lots of As still to be drawn. (-2) #leaveevaluationsmall
>Joshua: BDEGIRY 8A BED..... +48 259
>Joshua: BDEGIRY -- -48 211
#note J: I thought about this and then realized BLOTCHED probably doesn't have an anagram. Still thought that I was desparate enough. I had O7 GYBED though, and honestly only saw it after losing the challenge. This is on one of Carl's phonies lists and apparently he had just recently mentioned it to Sid. #knowledgelarge
C: During my insomniac studying session on Friday night/ Saturday morning, this was one of the phonies I studied. I always see BLOTCHED/BEDCLOTH* but I was ready for it this time. Some sick timing!
>Carl: AEEISTU H3 U.EA +7 364
#note This play makes it all but impossible that Josh bingos twice.
>Joshua: BDEGIRY O7 GYBED +41 252
>Carl: AEEILST N5 A.E +16 380
#note I saw APE C11 but figured I was closer to a bingo than Josh, and didn't want to block D13. This turned out to be a pretty costly mistake. (-3) #strategysmall
>Joshua: ABEINOR 14A ..BONAIRE +64 316
#note ridiculous that he didn't play A(P)E C11 and block my bing
>Carl: AEILOST 15G TELIA +25 405
#note Quackle burns the S for an extra 5 points with STELAI. I'm not sure why that is. Another superior play is OILCLOTH 8A, which I never would have seen. I'd find it as a bingo every time, but not as an extension. (-2% win chances, -10 valuation) #strategysmall, #visionlarge
>Joshua: AEINNNU G2 UN. +7 323
#note J: a valiant effort I guess
C: Of course I have the M.
>Carl: AEIMOSS J7 O.... +8 413
>Joshua: AEEFINN O1 INANE +21 344
>Carl: AEIMOSS 1G MIOSES +33 446
>Joshua: EF 15C EF +22 366
>Joshua: (A) +2 368
